Understanding Allergy Symptoms
The expression food allergies is widely used to mean an unpleasant reaction to a food that result’s in one or more physical symptoms.
Strictly speaking, the word “allergy” applies to responses made by the body’s immune system: other adverse reactions to food should be called food intolerances.
In both cases, if the problem food is avoided the systems should disappear.
It is vitally important to educate yourself in understanding allergy symptoms so you can avoid the triggers.
A true food allergy is more common in children than in adults. Many children will grow out of a food allergy, just as many children grow out of eczema. Allergy Symptoms are very unpleasant and in some cases can be debilatating.
Food intolerance can occur in a number of ways. Certain substances- namely caffeine in tea, coffee and cola drinks: tyramine in cheese, yeast and red wine: and histamine in beer, cheese, chocolate and canned fish- can really provoke a wide range of symptoms. This could be a migraine, skin flushing, diarrhea or even vomiting. Other foods, like tomatoes and strawberries, cause the body to release histamine into the blood stream which can cause flushing to a drop in blood pressure.
An adverse reaction to food can be psychological, rather than a physical cause, such as when someone associates sickness with a certain food. For example, if a woman experiencing morning sickness vomits after smelling or eating a certain food, she can often feel sick just at the mere mention of this food.
Here are some conditions caused by food allergy and food intolerance and their allergy symptoms
Eczema
Eczema is a distressing and persistent condition, which is also known as atopic dermatitis. It can develop at an early age and is common in pre school children. Many children will gradually grow out of this condition and there is usually an improvement by the age of five. Normally, a red rash appears, most often on the face and on the skin behind the knees and inside the elbows, but in severe cases the whole body can be affected. The skin can become thick and cracked. It can weep and even bleed and is extremely itchy. Research has shown that eczema is often triggered when associated with foods such as cow’s milk, eggs, fish, white flour and nuts.
Hives (also known as Urticaria)
Hives is a very common condition and is seen in all age groups. It is quite troublesome in children. White fluid filled lumps appear on the skin following contact with an offending substance and if it is triggered by food, often the lips and face can be affected. If you have hives, you should recall all the foods that you have eaten during the hour or two before you have the reaction.

Keeping a food diary really will assist you to identify the problem foods and will also help you to see a pattern in response to various foods. The smallest amount of gluten can cause a problem and gluten is found in many foods. Diagnosis and treatment by a specialist are essential and guidance from a dietician is very important.
